This summer, our One Big Day programme of events returns to locations throughout the UK. There will be five events, beginning with the flagship two-day show, The Big Event, at the NEC in Birmingham. The events showcase the wide range of cars, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), scooters and powered wheelchairs available to lease through the Motability Scheme. All events are free to attend, with free parking, and are a great day out for all the family. In this article, we caught up with the event organiser, Alison to find out what’s in store for 2019.
Where did the idea for the events come from?
We wanted to provide an opportunity for people to see a wide range of cars available on the Scheme under one roof. So, rather than visiting multiple dealerships, they can speak to experts, check out the vehicles on display and take a test drive, all in one place. Since they started 12 years ago, visitor numbers have grown from 1,200 to more than 20,000 attendees. This is one of the main reasons we introduced our flagship show, The Big Event, to enable us to reach more people in one of the UK’s biggest event spaces.
How are the venues chosen?
Stay up to date

We try to make sure the events are spread across suitable UK venues to reach as many customers as possible. We ensure that the venues have flat, accessible parking, clear access points and accessible toilets.
What can guests expect to find on the day?
There is free parking with parking attendants who can hail a buggy, offer assistance and give directions. Inside, visitors are met by advisors and provided with a map of exhibitors and a token for a free hot or cold drink. It’s not just about finding the right vehicle to meet your needs; Scheme partners such as RSA Motability, RAC and Kwik Fit are available to talk to, and there’s free children’s entertainment, too.
We trialed expert speaker sessions at The Big Event in 2018, to provide advice and tips on topics related to accessibility, mobility and driving. We will once again be holding these sessions at The Big Event this year and they’ll be live-streamed on our Facebook page for anyone who can’t attend.
Will there be test drives available at the events?
Yes. They’re the best way to discover the ideal mobility solution for your needs. Visitors can book in on the day with a professional instructor. Just remember to bring your driving licence.
