From 1 July 2018 the Motability Scheme is starting to introduce a new price promise for some of the most popular conversion options fitted to both new and Nearly New Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs).
Starting with items such as heavy duty tie-downs, needed for heavier powered wheelchairs, and privacy glass, the options can be fitted to any appropriate WAV and can be ordered from any of the Scheme’s WAV suppliers at a set price.
Scott Michael, Conversions and Adaptations Relationship Manager at Motability Operations adds “We have chosen some of the most popular conversion items which we know can make the difference between a WAV being suitable for a customer or not. By standardising the pricing for these items we aim to provide clear, transparent pricing and ensure that customers are able to access the right solution for their needs at a more affordable cost, regardless of which WAV or supplier they choose”.
Which options are available at a set price?
Starting from 1 July 2018, the following options are available:
- Upgraded tie down straps suitable for use with heavier powered wheelchairs (either 150kg or 200kg) at no extra cost.
- Privacy glass fitted as part of the conversion available at £195 for a small WAV or £250 for a medium or large WAV. Please note, some WAVs are based on models which include privacy glass as standard and therefore it is included in the price.
- Side steps can be fitted to either the driver or passenger side entrance to assist carers and passengers with the step-up entry to larger WAVs. A manual side step will cost £295 and an electric version will cost £595.
Please note that prices of these options are subject to review and may change on a quarterly basis in line with the pricing for all vehicles on the Motability Scheme.
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring we can offer the right WAV at an affordable price, we will continue to work with our WAV suppliers to widen the range of conversion options available at a set price.

How do I go about ordering?
As part of your home demonstration, your supplier will work with you to understand your needs and find the most suitable WAV and any conversion options to meet them. Your supplier will place the application for you and if it includes any of the set price conversion options, these will be listed on your paperwork from us when your application is processed.
What about other optional extras?
The set price only applies to a few of the most popular conversion options as listed above. If you require any further options that are not listed as a set price, you will need to speak with your WAV supplier and agree the price directly with them before placing your order.
