Driving in heavy rain and flooding

RSA Motability (RSAM), who provide insurance cover on the Motability Scheme, advise us on staying safe when driving in heavy rain or areas at risk of flooding.

Be prepared

  • Before you set off on your journey, make sure your route has not been affected by flooding by visiting the Environment Agency website. You can also find information on flood warnings and affected areas
  • Keep a note of your policy number and the RSA claims line number in your vehicle in the event that you need to contact us. If you need to contact RSAM to register a claim, please call 0300 037 3737. RSA Motability are open 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 8am-4pm on Saturday.

RSAM are working hard to deal with the increased number of claims as a result of the recent bad weather, and would like to reassure you that they will do everything that they can to keep you moving.

Be cautious

  • If you come across a flooded area, be cautious if you are unable to safely judge the depth of the water – try and find an alternative route. The air intake on many engines is situated low down at the front of the car. It can take just a small amount of water to damage the engine
  • If you travel through an area of water and your vehicle stalls, do not attempt to restart the engine as this is likely to cause engine damage. Call the RAC on 0800 73 111 73 for assistance
  • If you are travelling on wet roads, remember that the average stopping distance will be double what it normally is due to the wet conditions – if you are travelling at 30mph, it will take approximately 150 feet (or 12 car lengths) to stop safely.

Be safe

  • If you find yourself on a flooded road and unable to move any further, don’t attempt to get out of your vehicle unless you are concerned for your safety. Where possible, keep the doors closed so that water stays out of the vehicle. Call the RAC on 0800 73 111 73 for assistance.
