A game-changer: How a power add-on gives Chelsea more freedom

Chelsea Douglas is a devoted rugby fan, travelling across the UK and Europe to support her team. But as someone who uses a wheelchair, every trip means careful planning, and tackling challenges many fans never have to think about.

Thanks to the Motability Scheme, travelling to matches has become easier, and more enjoyable, than ever. Based in Glasgow, Chelsea is one of the first people to lease a manual wheelchair with a power add-on through the Scheme in Scotland.

New wheelchair option in Scotland

Customers in receipt of a qualifying mobility allowance from Social Security Scotland can now choose a wheelchair with a power add-on. These clever devices combine the flexibility of a manual wheelchair with the extra support of a battery pack. They are perfect for tackling longer distances or giving that extra boost when needed.

Made-to-measure wheelchair and add-on

Chelsea’s chair is a made-to-measure RGK Octane Sub 4, one of the lightest wheelchairs available. It’s paired with the Empulse F35 power add-on, giving her greater confidence and freedom when travelling.

It’s been life-changing. The Octane Sub 4 is an incredible piece of kit, so light and a dream to push thanks to the Carbo Life Curve pushrims. The ergonomic seating has made a great improvement to my posture and makes your chair so comfortable.

Affordable, flexible, and supportive leasing

Chelsea says she joined the Motability Scheme for its affordability and flexibility, describing having the option to pay monthly for her wheelchair and power add-on as advantageous. The opportunity to talk through her options with someone from the Scheme who is a wheelchair user themselves was also hugely reassuring for her.

Chelsea’s future with her wheelchair

With the rugby season starting again soon, Chelsea is already looking forward to her next adventures:

“The combination of the Empulse F35 and Octane Sub 4 will make a massive difference to travelling. I cannot wait for the many adventures to come.”

Check if you’re eligible to join the Scheme

If you receive a qualifying mobility allowance from Social Security Scotland, you can now lease a manual wheelchair, or a manual wheelchair together with a power add-on, through the Motability Scheme.

This new option in Scotland could make your everyday journeys, and adventures further afield, more accessible and enjoyable.
