The Caddy Maxi is Volkswagen’s van-based seven-seat MPV. Do not be put off by its van origins, because the Caddy is very similar to the Volkswagen Golf underneath. This makes it more comfortable, quieter and easier to drive than many van-based models.
Space is the biggest selling point of the Caddy Maxi. It’s 35cm longer than the regular VW Caddy, which is already roomy, but the Maxi also offers rear seats that can be slid back to offer loads of legroom for up to six passengers alongside the driver.
The tall body also makes it very easy to get in and out without bending down, which is perfect for those with limited mobility. For carers, the sliding rear doors also mean getting those with mobility issues in and out in tight parking spaces is much easier than in a regular car.
Do not worry about storing wheelchairs, with a huge boot that can hold multiple folded wheelchairs or a couple of fixed ones with ease. The Caddy Maxi is also popular as a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) conversion, giving plenty of space for those who need to stay in their wheelchairs within the car.
With plenty of interior storage and flexible folding seats (that can also be completely removed), the Caddy Maxi can handle any situation.
Although it’s clear inside that the Caddy Maxi is built to be hard wearing rather than posh, there’s solid materials, easy-to-use technology and a comfortable driving position. Although you do not sit quite as high as you do in the SUVs in this list, large windows give you a great view out.
Our pick of the Caddy Maxi’s engine range is the most powerful 2.0 TDI diesel. This offers enough performance for daily needs combined with excellent fuel economy.

If you do not need direct wheelchair access but need a car that’s easy to get in and out of, then the Nissan Qashqai is a great choice.
Its taller SUV body means the driver and passenger seats are raised up, meaning you do not need to bend down to get in as much as you would in a hatchback or saloon. The rear doors also open to a 90-degree angle, so those with limited mobility should not struggle to get in and out. Meanwhile, the Qashqai’s boot is easily large enough to take a folding wheelchair, with mid-spec models also coming with an electric tailgate.
Inside the Qashqai you’ll find ample space for four medium-sized adults, with comfortable seating and a high-quality feel. There’s also plenty of physical buttons making the dashboard easy to use, and Google Built-In technology giving you direct access to features such as Google Maps.
Every Qashqai comes well equipped as standard, but if you want luxury car features such as massaging seats and a Bose sound system then top-spec Tekna models offer plenty of toys.
You can get the Qashqai with pure petrol power, but our choice is the brilliant e-Power hybrid. It’s automatic-only, and super smooth whether you’re driving around town or cruising on the motorway.
What’s more, fuel economy is excellent with over 60mpg possible, yet the e-Power system also offers strong performance and electric-only running in town. Combined with a comfortable ride and plenty of grip, it’s a car for all situations and weather.
As an all-round car for drivers or passengers with mobility issues, the Nissan Qashqai e-Power is an excellent choice.

The Skoda Kodiaq is a superb large family car, but also one that appeals to carers or those with limited mobility.
You can choose a seven-seat version, with the two extra seats best suitable for children. But the five-seat version makes the most sense here, offering loads of space for four or five adults combined with a huge boot.
Getting in and out is easy even for those who normally struggle, with wide opening doors and a high seating position meaning you can slide into the seat without crouching. Once on board, the supportive and widely adjustable seats make getting comfortable easy, while there’s also a good view out the front, side and rear.
Those in the rear seats will find loads of leg and head space to stretch out. You can individually slide or recline the rear seats to give extra room for those that need it, while the optional third row of seats stows away in the boot floor easily.
Speaking of the boot, the Skoda Kodiaq has one of the biggest luggage spaces of any car on sale. With a massive 910 litres of space in the five-seat model, you’ll have no problem carrying all the equipment you need as well as two or three folding wheelchairs. The plug-in hybrid does have a smaller boot at 745 litres, but that’s still a very large load area.
On the road, the Kodiaq is quiet, capable and comfortable. Despite its large size it’s easy to place on the road and handles better than you might expect for a big SUV.
There’s a wide range of engines, from the affordable and quiet 1.5 TSI petrol to the punchy and economical 2.0 TDI diesel. But if its low running costs you want, then the Kodiaq iV PHEV (plug-in hybrid) is best, offering up to 76 miles of electric range on a charge along with decent performance.
