RAC reviews: 3 cars with big boot space

The RAC has reviewed three cars with big boot space available to lease through the Motability Scheme: the practical Dacia Jogger, the fun-to-drive Ford Puma, and the roomy Vauxhall Frontera.

Whether you need space for the family, an SUV that’s easy to handle around town, or one that’s packed with smart features, there’s something here for you.

This article, written by the RAC, compares comfort, practicality and value across three SUVs currently available on the Motability Scheme*.

Remember, prices can go up or down.

Dacia Jogger

  • Category: Medium SUV
  • Seats: 7
  • Petrol or petrol-electric hybrid
  • Boot space: 212-712 litres
  • Advance Payment: From £0

The Dacia Jogger is officially Britain’s cheapest seven-seater. It’s also the most affordable on the Motability Scheme.

In simple terms the Jogger is a stretched, estate-bodied version of the Dacia Sandero. However, that’s not telling the full story, because the 4.5-metre-long Jogger can take seven adults with ease. Even those in the rearmost row of seats have plenty of leg and head space, so children will be able to stretch out.

But what if you just want five seats and a big boot? Well, the Jogger delivers there too. The sixth and seventh seat lift out of the boot to create a van-like cargo area with up to 712 litres of space. The resulting boot space is larger than some much more expensive and bigger SUVs.

What’s more, the Jogger’s roof rails will carry an 80kg load, and Dacia will even sell you a two-person pop-up tent that attaches to the car.

While there are quieter and faster cars in this list, the humble Jogger offers an easy driving experience and a comfortable ride. You can have a 110hp 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine or the smoother and more efficient Hybrid, which brings more power and an automatic gearbox.

Despite the price, the Jogger isn’t as basic inside as you might expect. Even entry-level versions come with cruise control, keyless entry, rear parking sensors, air-con and LED headlights, while higher-spec versions add a touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring and even heated front seats.

Ford Puma

  • Category: Small SUV
  • Seats: 5
  • Petrol
  • Boot space: 456 litres
  • Advance Payment: From £0

Not only is the Ford Puma the best-selling new car in the UK, it also shows you don’t need to spend big to get a car with a practical boot.

Open up the Puma’s tailgate and you’ll find space for six airline carry-on suitcases. But the Ford has a trick up its sleeve in the form of the so-called ‘Megabox’. This is a big space underneath the main boot floor that could swallow two more carry-on suitcases.

The boot floor can also be clipped up to the rear seatbacks, meaning you could carry everything from walking sticks to plant pots sat upright in the Megabox. Oh, and it has a drain plug, so you can wash out muddy boots inside it, which is great for dog owners.

The Puma has much more to offer than a practical boot. For starters it’s great fun to drive, it’s agile and easy to thread through town while also being comfortable and confidence-inspiring on the open road.

The interior offers a high-mounted driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support on every model, helping with back pain on long journeys. Meanwhile even entry-level Titanium models have climate control, a big touchscreen and digital driver’s display, LED headlights and parking aids.

If you opt for top-spec ST-Line X trim you’ll find a host of goodies including an upgraded B&O sound system, part leather seats and an electric tailgate. But all Pumas have well-appointed interiors, and enough space for four medium-sized adults.

Vauxhall Frontera

  • Category: Small SUV
  • Seats: 5 seats
  • Petrol or electric
  • Boot space: Up to 460 litres
  • Advance Payment: From £0

If you’re old enough, you might remember the Vauxhall Frontera as a rugged off-roader back in the 1990s. If you don’t, it doesn’t matter, because this new model is quite different.

It’s not built to climb any mountains, but it’s much roomier and better to drive on the road. The Frontera has much more space inside than the old Vauxhall Crossland it replaces, while also being no more expensive to buy and available with zero advance payment on the Motability Scheme.

You’ll be surprised by how much passenger space there is inside, with headroom and legroom to spare even for tall adults. Like the Jogger, you can also option seven seats in the Frontera, although these are more suitable for children in the Vauxhall.

The boot capacity might not sound amazing, but because the Frontera has such a high roof compared to other small SUVs it’s easy to load anything from upright wheelchairs to large dogs. An adjustable boot floor and easy split-folding rear seats adds further practicality.

The Frontera is well-equipped for the money, as even entry-level models get LED headlights, cruise control, sat-nav, parking sensors and a reversing camera. Top models get heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, along with upgraded looks inside and out.

To drive the Frontera is easy and comfortable both in and out of town. It’s easy to see out of thanks to large windows, although you’ll be relying on the sensors and cameras when reversing as the rear view is a bit narrow.

You can opt for mild-hybrid petrol models, or the 113hp Frontera Electric that (in larger battery form) offers a range on a charge of up to 253 miles. That’s pretty good for a car at this price point, and makes the Frontera a great value and honest all-rounder.
