Tony Hudgell: How the Motability Scheme makes everyday life possible

At just nine years old, Tony Hudgell has already inspired people across the UK. After surviving life-changing injuries as a baby, he has raised millions for Evelina London Children’s Hospital and shown what determination can achieve.

Tony is also one of the Motability Scheme’s ambassadors. In this short film on YouTube, Tony and his family talk about how the Scheme gives him the freedom to take part in everyday life.

His mum, Paula, explains how their Scheme vehicle has changed things for the whole family. From the school run to hospital visits and family days out, the vehicle makes travel less stressful and far more manageable.

For Tony, mobility is about more than simply getting from one place to another. It’s about being able to say yes to opportunities, whether that’s joining friends, visiting new places, or taking part in fundraising challenges that have captured the nation’s attention.

Why Tony’s story matters to others

The challenges Tony and his family face are not unique. For the UK’s 16 million disabled people, planning a trip can often bring more stress than excitement. A recent survey by Euan’s Guide, supported by the Motability Scheme, found that four in five disabled people had experienced a disappointing trip or had to cancel plans because of poor accessibility.

The research also highlighted that:

  • 90% of disabled people have to research access in advance when visiting a new location
  • 77% said venue websites often gave confusing or inaccurate information

This means that many people spend hours preparing, only to find facilities are not as promised, or are out of order when they arrive.

Reliable information makes a difference

That’s why resources like The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain and Euan’s Guide are so useful. Both share reviews and ideas written by people with lived experience of disability. This helps families plan with confidence and know what to expect before they set off.

The Rough Guide features over 200 accessible days out across the UK, from nature reserves to museums, theme parks to historic tours. Every review is written to give an honest picture of accessibility, so people can focus on enjoying their trip rather than worrying about barriers.

A reminder of what’s possible

Tony’s journey shows what’s possible when the right support is in place. With his Scheme vehicle, he can take part in everyday life more easily and keep inspiring others through his fundraising and campaigning.
