Are you a regular wheelchair user? Do you struggle to transfer in to a standard car seat or is your carer finding it increasing difficult to help you transfer? If so, have you considered whether a person hoist could improve your experience? They are just one of the access adaptations available through the Motability Scheme. Watch as Julie tries a person hoist for the first time and shares her experience.
Person hoists are designed to physically lift the user up and into the car and have the benefit of allowing users to remain seated in their preferred position within a standard car seat – which can be really important if you regularly travel as a couple and would prefer to remain seated in the front passenger seat.
If you also find it difficult to lift and stow your wheelchair you could consider having a boot hoist fitted as well. Some customers prefer this combination of person hoist and boot hoist to a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Alternatively, you can choose to adapt your car with a swivel seat or a transfer plate to aid access to your car.
