A scooter built for adventure: Lee’s off-road test

Lee Bradley puts the new Excel Audax scooter through its paces in this article from Lifestyle Magazine*.

Lee Bradley knows what he needs from a scooter. As a Leicester Tigers season ticket holder and someone who loves exploring, he needs one that’s comfy, goes far, and can handle rough ground.

“There aren’t many scooters that can keep up with me,” says Lee. “I look for comfort and a good battery range. I can be on my scooter for six hours at a time.”

Lee currently leases a Pride Colt Deluxe 2.0 through the Motability Scheme. But ready to meet explorer Lee’s tough challenges was the newest model on the Motability Scheme: the 8mph road-legal Excel Audax.

The Audax comes with useful features, like bright LED lights, a fully adjustable tiller, a USB charger for a mobile phone, wing mirrors, and a large screen display. It also has keyless ignition, which helps people with reduced hand movement.

It’s a product designed for long journeys and tricky terrain.

It stands out because of its ability to cope with tough everyday demands. It has two 100Ah batteries, a top range of 40 miles, and can carry up to 28.66 stone (148kg). The 14-inch puncture-resistant tyres and strong suspension make it stable and easy to drive on different surfaces.

To put it to the test, Lee took the Audax to Stonebow Washlands, a local wildlife park which was extremely muddy and slippery. This challenge was not for the faint-hearted.

Comfort and control

Despite tricky conditions, Lee and his new scooter excelled.

“It has a really comfy, adjustable seat and padded armrests,” Lee says. “The looped tiller means I can steer easily, even with gloves on. And there’s loads of room for my legs on the non-slip footplate.”

Lee has been leasing scooters through the Motability Scheme for five years. But he’s known about them since 1992, when his dad used one. And he seems to have found his next product.

“I can only walk about 12 metres, so I need a scooter that does everything and fits in the back of a Renault Master next to my mum’s scooter,” he says. “Given how well the Audax handled off-road, it’s my first choice when my lease ends.”
