Spotlight: transportable powered wheelchairs

Powered wheelchairs are a popular choice on the Motability Scheme, as they are a reliable form of transport that can be used to suit different lifestyles.  

A standard powered wheelchair can help with daily activities, like shopping or visiting friends and family, as well as taking day trips. Many of the powered wheelchairs available on the Motability Scheme are easily transportable. This means they can be folded up or dismantled to a compact size, so you can get them into a car boot, and then easily extend or reassemble them again once you reach your destination.

Monarch Ezi-Fold 

What sort of powered wheelchair is it?  

The Monarch Ezi-Fold is a smart-looking powered wheelchair with a great trick up its sleeve, it’s combination of a clever folding mechanism combined with a light overall weight. It’s great for using on the pavement and has a passenger weight capacity of up to 130kg. The Monarch Ezi-Fold has sturdy solid tyres and is ideal for using on the pavement.   

Why is it so popular? 

A real plus point of the Monarch Ezi-Fold is its manageable overall weight. Overall, it weighs just 27kg. This will make it particularly easy to lift in and out of a car boot. Van Os Medical Quest 2023  

What sort of powered wheelchair is it?  

The Van Os Medical Quest is a really smart-looking powered wheelchair. It has a bright yellow chassis, meaning it’s both bold and easy to see on crowded pavements, or in low light. The joystick drive control is straightforward, and an extended footrest helps you get comfortable. For further comfort, the fixed seat has sturdy arm rests. 

Why is it so popular? 

The Van Os Medical Quest has a battery range of up to 20 miles. This should be more than enough for a weekend away in places where you might not easily be able to charge it up. The dual batteries are mounted low down, so their weight helps stabilise the powered wheelchair when you’re using it.  

Like all powered wheelchairs for use off the road, it has a maximum top speed of 4mph. It’s able to accommodate weights of up to 136kg. This folding powered wheelchair measures 82cm in length, 56mm in width and 105mm in height. For comfort, the fixed seat has sturdy arm rests. What sort of powered wheelchair is it?  

The Sunrise Medical Quickie Q50 is another powered wheelchair that’s easily transportable. It has been designed with practicality in mind, so the folding mechanism is quick and easy. It also has a powerful battery pack with a very impressive maximum battery range.  

Why is it so popular? 

The headline draw of the Sunrise Medical Quickie Q50 is its superb range of up to 31 miles. This makes it exceptionally dependable even if you’re having a full week away, as it cuts the number of times you need to recharge and means one less thing to worry about during busy day trips away.  

Despite its big battery, the Sunrise Medical Quickie Q50 is easy to put in the back of your car, with an overall weight of 37.5kg. Its dimensions are compact, so it’s easy to use in busy areas, while big wheels and shock-absorbing suspension give a smooth ride. Electric Mobility Ryley

What sort of powered wheelchair is it?  

The clever Electric Mobility Ryley is a new type of powered wheelchair with six wheels. This setup makes it very manoeuvrable and gives a smooth ride. The scooter-style seating is comfortable, and the seat comes with a lift for added convenience.   

Why is it so popular? 

The Electric Mobility Ryley is made for use in tight spaces. The six-wheel design gives outstanding manoeuvrability. It can turn on a sixpence and is ideal for use both indoors and outdoors where space is restricted.  

Full suspension gives a really comfortable ride even over rough terrain. It can handle kerbs up to 5cm off the ground with no bother, and has a carrying capacity of up to 136kg. A range of up to 22 miles means you have good amount of range while you’re out and about. . The Electric Mobility Ryley is offered in the fun colours of either Green Lightning or Orange Sunset. Invacare Erivo R11 

What sort of powered wheelchair is it?  

The Invacare Erivo R11 is a sturdy, high-quality powered wheelchair with a weight capacity of up to 150kg. The firm seat plate will make it comfortable for all shapes and sizes, and the sturdy design is finished in a classy-looking neutral gold colour. This gives it a premium, high-end look and feel.  

Why is it so popular? 

The Invacare Erivo R11 has a battery range of up to 22 miles, enabling you to have worry-free transport during a busy weekend away. The power control is easy to use too. The quality foam seat and in-built suspension gives a smooth ride, and the large, puncture-proof wheels give a stable feel.  

A clever folding mechanism means the Invacare Erivo R11 folds flat into an extremely compact size. A handy carrying handle makes it easy to transport and lift into the boot of your car.
