How to use your WAV’s tie-downs

If you travel in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), tie-downs help keep your wheelchair secure on every journey.

In this video, Brian from Alfred Bekker API shows how to use WAV tie-downs and restraints, including how the rear tie-downs work. Use our simple tips to feel more confident before you set off.

What are WAV tie-downs?

Tie-downs are the straps and restraints that help secure your wheelchair inside a WAV. Most passenger WAVs use a ramp or lift, then you or someone travelling with you will need to secure the wheelchair with tie-downs.

It’s important to keep your tie-downs in good condition, so they work as they should. The video shows you what to check and how the system works.

How to secure your wheelchair in a WAV

Every WAV can be a little different, so always follow the guidance from your supplier.

Before you travel, check that your wheelchair is in the right position. Then attach the tie-downs as shown in your WAV demonstration or user guide. The rear tie-downs help hold the wheelchair securely in place, so it’s worth taking a moment to check they’re fitted correctly before each journey.

You should also make sure the person using the wheelchair has their passenger restraint fitted too. This is separate from the tie-downs that secure the wheelchair.

Practise before your first journey

Your supplier will show you how your WAV works during your demonstration. This includes the ramp or lift, and how to use the tie-downs. Practise using them while the supplier is with you, so you can ask questions and feel confident.

It’s also a good idea to practise with anyone who’ll regularly travel with you or help secure the wheelchair. This helps everyone understand what to do.

Top tip

Tie-downs need to work properly every time you travel. Before you set off, check they are clean, easy to use and not twisted. If something does not look right, speak to your WAV supplier before travelling.

Thinking about getting a WAV?

If you’re new to the Motability Scheme or thinking about your next vehicle, you can explore the latest WAVs available. There are different sizes and layouts, including smaller options for up to four people and larger WAVs with more space for passengers or mobility equipment.

A WAV supplier can bring a vehicle to your home for a demonstration. They’ll help you try the features, check the space and understand how the tie-downs work.
