Amy Sheridan is a mum of five, blogger, writer, a freelance journalist and is currently studying her degree in journalism. As part of our days out blogs Amy has given us a peak into her busy life, telling us about a day out with her family at the Sea Life Centre in Scarborough.
My six year old daughter Isabelle has sensorineural deafness in both ears and wears hearing aids all the time, apart from when she is at home. We love to go on days out to aquariums that are a great visual and tactile experience, but also is a place that is well directed inside.
Our favourite place is the Sea Life centre in Scarborough, it has plenty of exhibits that she can get involved with and if she does become separated from us everything is well signposted. My biggest fear is Isabelle becoming lost whilst we are out, we are a family of seven so we do tend to stick together but she would find it difficult to communicate with someone if she did become lost.
The Sea Life centre is well contained and you follow a route around all the exhibits, Isabelle knows all her sea creatures so we could tell her to meet us at the Turtles if she could not see us. The shows like the seal feeding are visually entertaining and she can sit close to the front to lip read.
We love to go to as many places as we can as a family. When we do try a new place the children hold hands and Isabelle is always near the front so she can hear and see where we are going. Isabelle is such a free spirit she is never shy when going to a place she doesn’t know and I hope that continuing to take her to as many places as possible will fill her with even more confidence.
