Our customers’ stories: celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2022

Ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (#IDPWD) on 3 December, we’re giving a platform to some of our wonderful customers so that they can share their stories. They told us about their experiences and explained what the Motability Scheme means to them.

The theme of this year’s #IDPWD is ‘transformative solutions for inclusive development’ and we’re proud that the Scheme – and the independence it brings – enables people to have more everyday freedom. So, take a look below to hear stories from Scheme customers Jaiquane, Tracey, Sarah and Beth.

Jaiquane

Meet Jaiquane. He’s 17-years-old, a car enthusiast and has been a Motability Scheme customer since he was three. His car means that he can get from Nottingham into London for his appointments at Great Ormond Street hospital.

“My vehicle is my independence and without it, I wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff that I do now.”

Tracey

Tracey lives life to the full and drives her Motability Scheme car to local gigs so that she can enjoy live music. She is even planning a trip to Blackpool for the Rebellion Punk Music Festival, in memory of her late husband.

Without her car she says she “would’ve been stuck in the house or relied on lifts with friends”. Having access to the Scheme, she says, “gives me the freedom to go where I want to go”.

Sarah

Meet Sarah and her husband, Mark, who helps her stay mobile with her Motability Scheme car. When Sarah had to stop driving due to her epilepsy, she felt like “that’s your independence gone”. But with her Scheme car, and Mark as her “chauffeur”, she’s been able to raise awareness of epilepsy and hidden disabilities, as well as over £17,000 for charities.

Beth

17-year-old Motability Scheme customer, Beth, has a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) which her mum, Sam, says “gives her more independence and more freedom to do what she wants to do”. Which for Beth means going camping, spending time with her family, and even travelling to France in her WAV.
