Named Drivers

Did you know that you Motability Scheme lease includes up to three named drivers?

We get a lot of questions from customers on who can drive their car and we’ve seen these queries increase due to impacts from the COVID-19 situation. Here we break down everything you need to know on named drivers.

What are named drivers?

Named drivers are people you choose to drive your Motability Scheme vehicle. So, if you don’t want to or aren’t able to drive yourself then your car can be driven by friends, family or carers.

Two named drivers can be nominated when you place your application, then if you require a third driver during your lease, they can be added by contacting RSA Motability (RSAM) on 0300 037 3737.

Who can drive my car?

It’s important to remember that only named drivers are allowed to drive the car. Named drivers are shown as ‘permitted drivers’ on the Certificate of Motor Insurance.

To protect the Scheme, there are some rules surrounding who can drive your vehicle. However, it’s important to us that our customers remain mobile, so we have been working with RSAM to find ways to accommodate the unique situation customers may find themselves in :

  • Named drivers should ideally live within five miles of the disabled customer’s address. We will, however, consider requests to include drivers outside of this range where this is essential to support the customer’s mobility needs.
  • Normally, only one named driver under 21 is permitted – however considering the current climate we will temporarily permit additional drivers under 21, provided that they live at the same address as the disabled customer.
  • We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.
  • Proposed drivers with certain convictions, disqualifications or endorsements within the last five years will not be allowed. RSAM will be able to provide more information on this should you require it.

How do I add or change a driver?

All you need to do is call RSAM on 0300 037 3737 to add or change drivers free of charge. Please note that only the customer or their nominee can request a change of driver and the new driver you wish to add will need to be with you when you call, this is so that RSAM can check their details and add them to the insurance straight away.
